Project of Choreographing Stories

"Skip Sticht " (Public!)

*2020 Premiere, Zhongli Taiwan

*2021 Want to Dance Festival, Taipei Taiwan

Skip Stich (Public!) is the third year of the project of "Choreographing Stories". The premiere is released in November 2020 with Ya-Zhi Dance in Zongli, Taiwan. In 2021, the piece is invited to the "Want to Dance Festival" in April 2021.

In this project, the performers consist of a group of married women exploring their identity and role in different stages of life. We work by asking 10 questions, which became the choreographic score of this piece:

  1. Which part of your body do you like the best?

  2. During your whole life, what do you regret till now?

  3. What is the most frequently said sentence in your life or work?

  4. In life what is the most common word you hear others describing you?

  5. What kind of advice are you been given the most?

  6. What does "freedom" means to you?

  7. Do you think you are free now?

  8. From above, what are you willing to do to gain freedom?

  9. Describe the most romantic story in your life.

  10. Describe a story in your life that you most want to share with others.

In Taiwan, we still share a traditional mindset in the social structure. When a woman is in a relationship with a family, they would need to live multiple roles of life, and this, for many people leads to giving up her own life and dreams, and focus on her family life (kids, husband, grandparents of the husband, etc.) As their kids became grown-up, their devotion to the family decreases and they come into the empty-nest period of their life. For married for 20-30 years, this sudden change leads to a depressed stage of life and as well opens the thought of accomplishing what they have given up before marriage. The discussion of the concept of "freedom" became crucial. As we interview them, it is fun to find out that almost all performers think freedom is a rare experience in their life. Living as a girl in their lives leads to strong stereotypes of how they should behave, what work should they do, which school they should go to, etc., and so they have to give up many thoughts throughout their life. It is not until now, as the social is more open and they are in their 40-the 60s that they finally started to purchase their dreams as a girl.
